My Favorite Promo Emails – June 2018

by | Jul 12, 2018

June is just a touch later than previous entries but it does include some interesting email design, for sure. The farther I get into this project the more I see just how much brands repeat their email designs. I would be very interested to see their stats on their effectiveness.

The Movies

I got Moviepass this month, so I have been paying closer attention to the movie promotional emails I get. Jurassic World broke the grid in a way I have only seen on Tumblr. Hotel Artemis used some cool glitch effects over stills from the film. It is basically a website. Both are just visually stunning. (I have seen neither movie though lol)

Fandango for Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom

Gofobo for Hotel Artemis

The Big Reveal

Some emails really uses the full space of the screen to tell a story and keep the recipient on the page. Here are just a few.

Longhorn Steakhouse

I have marked Longhorn’s emails a few times for possible inclusion. This month really sealed the deal for me. Their movement and playful reveal are refreshing, especially because the email itself is so masculine.

Pampered Chef

This one is pretty fascinating to me. I save the gif seperately from the text block so when I went to reassemble this example I actually started backwards. By leading with copy, this email is sort of a rule breaker, but to awesome effect. The sandwich maker pops up from the bottom of the page, promoting scrolling and engagement. Check out that white space! Super cool.

4-up Buttons

This is a subtle detail which I normally wouldn’t focus too heavily on. But these buttons are great. Some emails just need to hit a ton of different things at once and these show an elegant way of leading the receipient to topics beyond the emails main focus. (Also look at that cute bike)

Roostery

Anthropologie

Image Background Followup

There were not as many emails with image backgrounds this month (Or they were just repeats). I did, however, want to talk about one which is not working as well as the designer probably intended.

With this Pack Up + Go email, the background looks alright on desktop and mobile, but if on a wider screen or any in between size the icons get off center and reveal a white space in the middle. This is not to mention the grey bars which repeat.

Overall, it is a very well designed email, it just has a programming quirk which should get fixed.

Subtle Gif Followup

Modcloth is keeping up their cinemagraph style as always. Just wanted to share this cute pun.
